Day 1 — Delhi to Jaipur: Palaces, Observatories & a Royal Evening
Your air-conditioned car collects you from your Delhi hotel, airport, or railway station. The drive to Jaipur — 250 km via the Delhi–Jaipur Expressway — takes approximately four hours in normal traffic. It’s a comfortable, well-maintained highway journey, and the landscape shifts noticeably as you move from the flat Gangetic plains into the drier, rockier terrain of Rajasthan. Arrive refreshed. Jaipur begins.
🏰 Late Morning — City Palace
Check in to your centrally located heritage hotel, leave your luggage, and head straight to City Palace — the grand heart of Jaipur, and still the residence of the royal family of Jaipur to this day.
Built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II beginning in 1729, City Palace is not a single building but a complex of courtyards, gardens, temples, and pavilions that blend Rajput and Mughal architectural styles in a way unique to Jaipur. Your guide walks you through the principal halls: the Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience), where two enormous silver urns — the largest silver objects in the world — once carried Ganges water for Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh I on his voyage to England in 1901; the Diwan-i-Am (Hall of Public Audience), with its ornate painted ceiling; and the Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors), whose walls and ceilings are encrusted with thousands of mirror fragments that scatter candlelight into constellations.
The palace museum houses an extraordinary collection of royal costumes, weapons, manuscripts, and artefacts — including robes that give immediate, visceral scale to how physically imposing certain Maharajas were.
🔭 Mid-Morning — Jantar Mantar
A short walk from City Palace brings you to Jantar Mantar — one of the most remarkable and least understood monuments in India. Built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in 1734, it is the largest of five astronomical observatories he constructed across India, and contains 19 architectural instruments of extraordinary precision.
The centrepiece is the Samrat Yantra — a sundial whose shadow moves at a measurable rate of one millimetre per second, enabling time to be read to an accuracy of two seconds. Other instruments track celestial positions, predict eclipses, and calculate the movements of planets — all without telescopes or mechanical aids, using geometry and shadow alone.
UNESCO inscribed Jantar Mantar as a World Heritage Site in 2010. Your guide makes the science tangible — this is not a place to admire vaguely from a distance but to actually understand.
🌸 Afternoon — Hawa Mahal
No image of Jaipur is more instantly recognisable than Hawa Mahal — the Palace of Winds. Its five-storey honeycomb façade of 953 small windows, carved from pink sandstone in the form of a crown, rises above the main bazaar of the old city like an enormous piece of jewellery.
Built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, it was designed so that the women of the royal zenana (household) could observe street festivals, processions, and daily life below without being seen themselves. The latticed screens created a natural ventilation system — even in the fierce Rajasthan summer, the interior remains several degrees cooler than the street outside.
The best view of Hawa Mahal is from across the street, where its full façade can be photographed in context with the bazaar below. Your guide knows exactly where to stand.
Day 2 — Amber Fort, Jal Mahal, Nahargarh & the Bazaars
🐘 Early Morning — Amber Fort
The early start on Day 2 is deliberate. Amber Fort — the original hilltop capital of the Kachwaha Rajput rulers before Jaipur was built — is best seen before the day tours arrive from Delhi and Jaipur.
The approach alone is worth the visit. The fort rises dramatically from the Aravalli Hills above Man Sagar Lake, its ramparts climbing the ridgeline in a series of concentric walls. Your elephant ride carries you up the cobbled ramp to the main gate — the same route taken by the Maharajas and their courts for three centuries.
Inside, your guide walks you through the complex’s four principal courtyards: the Jaleb Chowk (public courtyard), the Singh Pol gate leading to the royal apartments, the extraordinary Sheesh Mahal (Hall of Mirrors) whose entire ceiling is composed of convex mirror fragments arranged so that a single candle appears to illuminate the room with stars, and the Sukh Niwas — the Hall of Pleasure, cooled by a water channel running through its marble floor, a 17th-century air-conditioning system of elegant ingenuity.
The views from the fort’s upper ramparts extend across the lake, the surrounding hills, and the distant skyline of Jaipur — one of the finest panoramas in Rajasthan.
Note: Elephant rides are subject to availability and seasonal factors. Your guide will confirm on the day. Alternative jeep transport is available if needed.
💧 Late Morning — Jal Mahal
At the base of the Amber road, the Jal Mahal — the Water Palace — sits in the centre of Man Sagar Lake with an eerie, romantic stillness. Built in the 18th century as a duck-hunting lodge for the Maharajas, it appears to float: five storeys tall, four of which are submerged. What you see above the waterline is a single storey of Rajput architecture — arched pavilions, corner towers, and a rooftop garden — reflected perfectly in the surrounding water.
Jal Mahal is not open to the public for interior visits, but the lakefront promenade provides some of the best photography in Jaipur — particularly in the early morning, when the light is golden and the crowds are thin. Your guide will position you perfectly.
🛍️ Afternoon — Shopping in the Pink City
No visit to Jaipur is complete without time in its bazaars — among the finest craft shopping destinations in India.
Johari Bazaar for gemstones and gold jewellery — Jaipur is the world’s largest centre for coloured gemstone cutting and trade, and the quality and range here is extraordinary. Bapu Bazaar for block-printed textiles, tie-dye fabrics, and Rajasthani quilts. Tripolia Bazaar for lac bangles, brassware, and traditional metalwork. Nehru Bazaar for juttis — the embroidered leather shoes that are Jaipur’s signature footwear export.
Your guide knows which shops have been operating for generations, which craftsmen’s workshops can be visited, and how the system works so you’re buying well rather than just buying. Budget for at least 90 minutes here.
🚗 Late Afternoon — Drive Back to Delhi
Your driver takes you back to Delhi via the expressway, arriving in the early evening. Drop-off at your hotel, airport, or preferred Delhi location.
Two days. Five major monuments. An elephant ride, a folk evening, a royal feast, and a city that manages to be simultaneously ancient and completely alive.
