4 Nights, 5 Days in the Golden Triangle: What the Extra Day Buys You

Short answer: the fifth day is added at the front, not the end. It is an arrival day in Delhi — you land, check in, and do nothing. The sightseeing then runs exactly as it does on the four-day route. If you are flying long-haul, that first day is the difference between starting the trip rested and starting it at a dead run.

Where the Extra Day Goes

This is the part people get wrong. They assume five days means an extra city, or a second day in Agra. It does not. The 4 nights 5 days golden triangle tour takes the four-day itinerary and puts a rest day in front of it.

The Five Days, in Detail

Day 1 — Arrive in Delhi

Your driver meets you at the airport, the station or your hotel and takes you privately to check in. The evening is yours. Nothing is scheduled, and that is the entire point of the day.

Day 2 — Old and New Delhi, then the road to Agra

A full day across both halves of the city: Jama Masjid, a cycle-rickshaw ride through the lanes of Chandni Chowk, the Red Fort from outside, Qutub Minar, the Lotus Temple, India Gate and the Gurudwara. Then about four hours down the expressway to Agra, so you sleep within reach of the Taj Mahal.

Day 3 — Sunrise at the Taj, then Jaipur

At the gates before they open, for the hour when the marble changes colour and the crowds have not arrived. Back to the hotel for breakfast and checkout, then Agra Fort — Akbar’s red sandstone citadel, and the marble tower where Shah Jahan spent his last years looking across the river at the tomb he built. Then roughly five hours to Jaipur, broken by the Abhaneri step well — Chand Baori, a 9th-century tank of stepped geometry descending thirteen storeys. There is more on that road in our guide to the best places to stop between Agra and Jaipur.

Day 4 — A full day in Jaipur

Amber Fort and the Sheesh Mahal, Panna Meena Ka Kund — the criss-cross stepwell beside the fort that the shorter itineraries skip — then the City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal and Jal Mahal. No driving between cities. You sleep in Jaipur again.

Day 5 — Back to Delhi

Breakfast, checkout, and five to six hours to Delhi, with a drop at the airport, your hotel or the station. Nothing is scheduled against it, which matters if you are connecting to a flight the same evening.

Who the Arrival Day Is Actually For

Be honest with yourself about your flight. Many long-haul arrivals into Delhi land late at night or in the small hours. On a four-day itinerary, that means clearing immigration at two in the morning, sleeping badly, and starting a full day in Old Delhi a few hours later — with the earliest start of the whole trip, the Taj at sunrise, waiting the next morning.

The arrival day removes that. It is worth the extra night if:

  • You are flying from North America, Europe or Australia, and the time difference is significant
  • You land late in the evening or overnight
  • You are travelling with children or with anyone who does not bounce back from a long flight
  • You would rather see the Taj Mahal properly awake than merely be present at it

It is not worth it if you are already in India, arriving on a short regional flight, or your dates simply will not stretch. In that case the four-day route covers the same ground — we have set out how three days compares with four as well.

What It Costs

The five-day tour starts at $239 per person against $219 for four days. That is $20, plus one additional hotel night, which you choose the tier of.

Put plainly: the arrival day costs about the same as a decent dinner, plus a room. Most of the cost of a Golden Triangle tour — the car, the driver, the guides, the pickups — is already committed the moment the trip begins, which is why the extra day is so cheap. We break the whole thing down in what a Golden Triangle tour actually costs.

Hotels and monument entry fees are quoted separately on both itineraries, so compare them like for like.

Practical Notes

  • The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday for prayers. We check your dates against that before confirming anything.
  • A foreign-visitor Taj ticket is ₹1,100, with ₹200 more to enter the mausoleum. Here is how to buy Taj Mahal tickets online.
  • October to March is the comfortable season. Our month-by-month guide covers what each one is actually like.
  • Fatehpur Sikri is an optional extra, not part of the standard route — about ninety minutes, on the same Agra–Jaipur road as the Abhaneri stop.
  • Everything is private — your own car, driver and a licensed local guide in each city.

Our View

If you are flying in from a long way away, take the five days. The extra $20 is not the real cost — the extra night is — and what you get for it is the whole trip experienced awake rather than the first two days lost to a fog.

If you are already in the region, the four-day route loses you nothing. See the five-day itinerary in full, compare it with the four-day version, or look at every Golden Triangle length side by side. Or send us your flight times and we will tell you honestly which one fits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the extra day on a 4 nights 5 days Golden Triangle tour give you?

It gives you an arrival day in Delhi at the start. You land, transfer to your hotel and rest, with no sightseeing scheduled. The remaining four days then follow the same route as the four-day itinerary: Delhi, the Taj Mahal at sunrise, Agra, the Abhaneri step well and a full day in Jaipur.

Is 5 days enough for the Golden Triangle?

Yes, comfortably. Five days covers Delhi, Agra and Jaipur with one long drive per day, a sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal, a full unhurried day in Jaipur, and a rest day at the start for travellers arriving long-haul.

How much more does the 5-day Golden Triangle tour cost than the 4-day?

The five-day tour starts at $239 per person against $219 for the four-day, so $20, plus one extra night of hotel accommodation at whichever tier you choose. Hotels are quoted separately on both.

Does the 5-day Golden Triangle tour include Fatehpur Sikri?

No. The road stop included between Agra and Jaipur is the Abhaneri step well, also known as Chand Baori. Fatehpur Sikri sits on the same road and takes around ninety minutes; it can be added to any itinerary on request.

Should I choose 4 days or 5 days for the Golden Triangle?

Choose five if you are flying long-haul into Delhi, landing late, or travelling with children — the arrival day absorbs the jet lag. Choose four if you are already in India, arriving rested, or working to fixed dates. The sightseeing is the same either way.
